1883 Series, Musings, and Character Ponderings

My husband and I have been watching the 1883 series. Although we don't watch the Yellowstone series, we have really enjoyed 1883. I absolutely loved the way the relationship between Elsa and Ennis was written. While I liked the characters for themselves and how they worked in the whole 1883 story, I also liked them because that innocent youthful relationship is exactly what I've tried to capture with Aeronwen and Neldor. In both cases the male is a little older, but not by much. He had more life experiences, but again, not a vast amount. In fact, Elsa and Ennis were both virgins during their first (and sadly only) time together. So to the readers who have sent me messages saying that Neldor and Aeronwen both being virgins is "unrealistic" and "impossible to believe"; take that!

In last night's episode, Ennis was killed. I knew it was coming but it was still a heartbreaking scene to watch. The young actress who played Elsa did an amazing job expressing her character's grief. When she laid down on the ground and nestled against Ennis' body after shooting his killer dead...heartbreaking!

This brought to mind the occasional thoughts I've had about Neldor being killed off and what that would do to Aeronwen. It would certainly change her. However, although the amateur writer in me occasionally feels tempted to explore this story arc, I realized that there is no good story reason to put Aeronwen through such a loss. For Elsa, the loss of Ennis plays a part in how she develops and faces the challenges that are still ahead of her and her family. So as gut-wrenching as Ennis' death is, this turn of the story is in fact productive.

To kill off Neldor, that would feel like grief and heartbreak just for the sake of writing grief and heartbreak. Now, if I were planning on doing the main quest (with or without GHD), I can see where killing Neldor could be what makes Aeronwen end up going to Caius for his dreaded orders. She might feel like she doesn't care about the life she's made on Vvardenfell anymore. There's no point in it, so she goes to do whatever the Emperor sent her to do. If she dies in the process, fine.

Incidentally there would be no romance with Dagoth Ur if she went on the GHD path. Having been in a deep relationship with Neldor, someone who was more on her level, and having lost that innocence, I don't think she would be susceptible to Voryn's experienced worldly charm.

So the whole point of this entry? There really is no point other than just to muse about a pair of characters on 1883 who made me think, "Yes! That's what I'm trying to express with my characters! That's it!" And I suppose another point is that Neldor is quite safe from the chopping block since I really don't like angst just for the sake of angst.

It seems too many stories today are written for the sake of angst.

LOL, people are sending you messages about being virgins is unrealistic? Why do people think that characters in this fantasy world have to have so-called modern day sensibilities?
